How to read the silver rate
This page shows an indicative silver rate in two figures. The market rate is the wholesale benchmark. The retail rate is what jewellers and shops typically quote, and it includes their margin. Both are shown per gram and per kilogram, excluding GST, and you can switch on 3% GST. Making charges are not included.
Market rate is the wholesale benchmark; retail rate is what jewellers and shops typically quote, which includes their margin.
How to use the two rates
Start with the market rate when you want the wholesale figure. It is the lower of the two. The per-gram line is rounded to the nearest rupee on the card. The per-kilogram line is the checked kilogram rate, so it will not always be a neat thousand times the rounded gram. The table keeps both.
Use the retail rate when you are about to walk into a shop. It is higher because it includes a margin. It is still not a promise of the price on your bill. A shop can add making charges, and one city can differ from another. Compare the retail rate with the rate the shop writes down, at the same weight, before you look at the workmanship.
The chips cover 1 gram, 10 grams, 100 grams and 1 kilogram. The box under the table, or beside these notes on a wide screen, prices any other weight and shows the market rate and the retail rate together.
Why silver costs more in India
Silver that is brought into India is taxed before it reaches a shop. Basic customs duty on silver bars is 10%. The Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess, shortened to AIDC in notices, is 5% on silver other than dore. Dore still needs refining and is not the silver a shop sells as jewellery or as a coin. Those import charges are a reason the Indian price sits above the metal alone.
A shop bill then adds 3% GST. That tax is on the sale. It is not a making charge. There is no single government schedule for making charges. The invoice is the place to read them. If the heading on the invoice differs from the usual precious-metal heading, trust the invoice for the tax on that purchase.
Buying silver
Decide first whether you want the metal itself, such as a coin or a bar, or a piece of jewellery. Jewellery adds workmanship. The retail rate is a fair starting point for the metal in a shop. It is a poor guess for a heavy design with stones.
Keep the bill. It names the weight, the purity and the charges. A listed way to hold metal, including funds that sit alongside gold funds, is described under gold ETF. The gold options guide is about gold, not silver. The tax on gold guide is also about gold. This page does not set the tax on a silver sale. Gold for the same day is on gold rate today.
If you do not see a number, the rate will be updated shortly. When a number is on the page, the line above the cards gives the date and the time in IST.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the market rate and the retail rate?
Market rate is the wholesale benchmark. Retail rate is what jewellers and shops typically quote, and it includes their margin. The retail rate is the one to set beside a shop’s quote. Making charges are extra.
Does this silver rate include 3% GST?
The cards open excluding GST. Switch to “With 3% GST” for the same metal plus GST. Making charges are in neither view. The invoice names the tax on the silver you buy.
Why is the kilogram figure not a round thousand times the gram?
The per-gram market rate on the card is rounded to the nearest rupee, so it is easy to read. The per-kilogram line keeps the checked kilogram figure. Use the kilogram line for a kilo, and the gram line for a single gram.
Why does silver cost more once it is in India?
Imported silver bars attract basic customs duty of 10% and the Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess of 5% on silver other than dore. A shop bill then adds 3% GST, and the shop can add making charges.
Will a shop match the retail rate?
The retail rate is a typical shop quote for the metal, not a ceiling and not a floor. Making charges, the city and the design can all move the bill. Read the invoice before you pay.
Which weight should I look at?
Use 1 gram for a quick comparison, 10 grams for a small buy, 100 grams for a larger one, and 1 kilogram for a wholesale-sized figure. The box prices any other weight and shows both rates.
